NOTES ON SECURITY UPDATE OF Internet Explorer

The following is a simplified set of instructions for those using a version of IE earlier than IE5.01 or those using IE5.01 or IE5.5 without service pack 2 (SP2) and without the latest security All the literature I have see talks of updating 5.01 and 5.5 to close the door, you have 5.00, I would update!.

We would IE update to IE 5.5, we don't know of any reason IE users shouldn't, it is free and 5.5 with SP2 is the one that McAfee and Microsoft say closes the door on bugbear. In any case it fixes a number of security leaks, especially when you also install the Q323759 security patch update..

You can update from the Microsoft update center, just download 5.5,with Serrvice Pack 2 after that is installed download and install the security update Q323759. The relevant URLs are below.

The page with the download, including Service Pack 2 is:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/archive/default.asp

You want the first choice

Note, I am not suggesting upgrading to IE6.01 because it is a radical change in interface and does more to take over your computer than I am confortable with, up to you.

The page with the security patch, after you have IE5.5 with SP2 is:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q323759ie/default.asp

Here is the relevant McAfee page describing bugbear and the SP2 solution
