   Slum City of the Mind

Slum City of the Mind (The World of Richard Harter)
The World of Richard Harter) This is the type of eclectic product of a slightly deranged mind that we like to find for the miscellany page. Many cool sections, we especially recommend, practically everything on this site. Even the unfinished pages, such as "Literature: Science Fiction are a delight. Mr. Harter, the sites author says: This site is best viewed with a bottle of scotch. This site isn't hot; it isn't cool; it's, well, it's sort of tepid, a cross between an e-zine and an intellectual rubbish heap. Below you will find lots of links, some of them are links to past and present e-zine issues, some are links to topical areas, and some to just there to help you find your way around. There are also links to the most recently added pages. Enjoy! (December 2001)

Miscellany - Too wonderful or weird to categorize too informative or too much fun to leave out.

THE WEIRD and WONDERFUL

Weird Nursing Tales: Medical Humor This site claims to have the largest collection of medical humor on the internet. Well, break a leg and enjoy.

Eric's Treasure Troves of Science for treasure troves of Chemistry, Math, Music, Physics, and more. This site has the cohesiveness and charm of a labor of love. We think you'll be as enchanted by this site as we are. As an example Eric's Treasure Trove of Astronomy is just what you think it is. MANY interesting facts about astronomy, arranged by intelligent and useful categories. For instance, if you're interested in Spring you'll be led to equinox, vernal equinox, season, winter, summer, autumn, and much more. The site was created and is maintained by Eric Weisstein who describes himself as a recent Ph.D. in planetary science, undergraduate in physics and astronomy, and closet recreational math devotee. After visiting his site, you'll describe him as "cool." He's also a Hoosier.

fs2.gif (796 bytes)The Free Site A wonderful and well categorized guide to hundreds of sites on the web offering free stuff. The range is amazing, from free games, graphics, and java applets to software sticky notes for your desktop, an on screen text magnifier, and deodorant. There is also a newsletter to subscribe to which brings you the latest on free services, samples, and products on the net, and, of course, its free! If this site just whets your appetite go on to Free2bs which features free graphics, postcards, recipes and its own set of FreeStuff Links. Or, visit Freebies Links or Janine's Freebie Links which specialize in links to sites with free stuff..

Darwin Awards The Darwin awards are purportedly to commemorate those who made "the ultimate sacrifice" by eliminating themselves from the species in an extraordinarily stupid way, thereby "improving the gene pool." This has become such a popular award that there seem to be several sets of candidates, those at the Darwin Awards and others such as the one at http://www.tiac.net/users/cri/darwin.html which lists its own set of nominees which may be apocryphal, but are fun to read.

KOOKS - Pure and Simple
If you are unaware of the American penchant for truly cool kookiness. If you've never heard of Lawsonomy and the theory of ZIG, ZAG, and SWIRL then you owe it to yourself to visit the
Kooks Museum which is the brainchild of Donna J. Kossy and a wonderfully "kook" prone brain it is! Here you can find the Library of Questionable Scholarship with the wonderful story of Lawsonomy and Zig,-Zag-And-Swirl and many other wonders. The site contains a gift shop, Schizophrenic Wing, Conspiracy Corridor, Hall of Quackery; Monuments to Kookdom

This site features sections such as: The Ten Top Sites of the Week; The Best of the Best; Sci Fi, Fantasy & Horror, Resource & Writing; Art; Publications; Cutting Edge; and Personal Pages. The reviewing is irreverent and aggressive and the selection is eclectic. You're sure to find something from this dragon that will set your fancy to flight. The parent, or perhaps egg, out of which this dragon hatches is the on-line magazine of speculative fiction Eternity. For a complete description of that magazine see our MAGAZINE page or our SCIENCE FICTION page

OTHER CULTURES:

Other Cultures: There are many other cultures throughout the world, some of them are even viable. None, we believe, has ever come close to having the breadth and depth of satirical possibilities and/or just plain silliness as American culture, although some have aspired, the British in the 19th century, the German in the 20th, and the French all the time. However, we offer this site to those who are interested in comparative foible research.

The Web of Culture™ "is designed to educate and entertain you on the topic of cross-cultural communications. Much of this site is dedicated to helping travelers with cross cultural differences. However, there are a number of interesting areas for non-travelers as well.

Comedy Central This is the site of the cable network Comedy Central. It features pages for shows such as South Park, Ben Stein's Money, and The Tick. There are Games and Parody, Horoscope, and TV Schedule pages as well as other specials and games. At their store you can order show related merchandise from such shows as Kids in the Hall, Saturday Night Live, Dr. Katz, South Park, and others. The Onion This site states that it is appropriate only for 18 year olds and above. Some of the best satire being produced today. This is a GREAT site. The has numerous truly well written bogus news articles, laid out in the form of newspaper pages. The writing is excellent and very funny, often biting, often ironic, often gentle. Extended satire is one of the hardest types of writing and these authors have it down to a fair-thee-well. One of the great things about this site is the ecumenical nature of the satire. If you are not offended by at least one of the articles in their current list or archive, you should check your pulse. The weak side of the site are its cartoons, which are uneven and more amateurish -- with a tendency toward the sophomoric, and the occasional lapse into the use of crude language or graphics, to no good effect. Theses are nowhere near as funny as their articles but, these lapse, account for a lot of the material on this site which leads them to state that the site is appropriate only for 18 year olds and above. Their articles also cover topics and occasionally use language to which parents might not want their children exposed. If you're a sentient adult you'll probably find this site irresistible and you'll probably find a great satirical treatment of one our more of your pet peeves about society today, we know we did.

Oracle Humor Link
This site's central repository of humor is an extensive hypertext archive of humor, broken into such categories as Daily Life, Men & Women, Star Trek Humor, Computer Humor, Political and more. Note that this site is not child-proof and has jokes that are not appropriate for children. In addition to their humor archive Oracle humor has its own humor magazine section, a comic page, and services such as e-mailed jokes.

OVI's World of the BIZARRE BIZARRE is in the eye of the reader, these may be just plain folks. This is a site claiming hundreds of TRUE stories of bizarre happenstance collected from the world's media. You can browse past issues of their collections, or subscribe and have each issue automatically e-mailed. Cartoons, stories, a very fun site.

Return to Top of the Page.

Vincent Flanders' Web Pages That "do the opposite of put your lips together and blow..." (censorial sic) This is a kind of black humor site. It features examples of really laughably bad web page design, with comments and suggestions. The site is witty and has won a number of awards. It would be more helpful if there were some examples of good implementation of the same pages but, since the site uses real on-line examples, this probably isn't practical. For instance, the site is constantly talking about the horrors of lack of content and of using frames, graphics, animations, and color to excess and badly. Without a countervailing example of good use of these things you're liable to get --- US! They have a sister site in preparation, for good little pages, but as anyone from John Milton to Madonna can tell you, that's not as much fun.

TECHNOLOGY

HOME TOYS: Home Technology News In his classic short story "There Shall Come Soft Rains" Ray Bradbury describes an automated house that is so faithful in fulfilling its masters wishes that it continues to function (making toast, waking the children, etc.) even after the owners of the house have been blown away by an inconvenient little nuclear holocaust. This site doesn't promise such doggedness or reliability, but it does offer fascinating information about the development and implementation of home automation devices that were literally science fiction, not so long ago. Features include such articles as: Simply Smart Home, Totally Automated , Building System, HomeVision, Universal Remote, Music CD Manager, What's in Our Future, Infra=Red Automation, Home Technology Newsletter HTI News), Resources, Shareware Library, Tips and Tricks Archive, Directory of Home Automation and Security companies, and a lot more.
