THE MOVIELINE This site bills itself as
"Movie reviews: Just the facts, No Ratings and No Biases." In a, presumably,
unintended bit of irony the only things on the home page are their name, the above motto,
an e-mail address, and categories, by RATING: "G," "PG," PG13,"
and "R." They possibly meant no ratings in the sense that they don't give stars
**** to the movies to denote relative goodness. The first review we checked out was for
the Glenn Close/Jeff Daniels remake of 101 Dalmatians. In the first few paragraphs
we found this statement concerning the scariness of the movie: "A warning may be
advisable. . ." --sounds like a bias against scaring your child to us. We suspect
that they wanted to convey the thought "no prejudice" rather than "no
bias" in their motto. We don't like to carp (actually, we love to carp) but, if you
don't have a bias toward good acting, movies, special effects, or whatever, what business
do you have reviewing movies anyhow? In fact, this is the most rating conscious and one of
the most biased movie review sites we've seen. That's what makes it interesting, the
reviewers have opinions and expectations based on experience (that's what a bias is) about
the contents of the movies, that's what makes them interesting. They should ditch the
slogan, since all three parts are erroneous or ambiguous: they give you more than just the
facts, they categorize by ratings, and they present their aesthetic and artistic judgments
and warnings based on biases developed through their experience and perception, just like
every one else.
(We really are VERY het-up on this language thing. So, at the risk of boring you, we'll be
explicit: prejudice is opinion without experience (pre-judgment) bias is opinion gained
through experience, as in "I'm biased in favor of the farmers' markets because I
have found that they generally have better vegetables." Using one word to mean
another destroys the distinction between the two. Destroy enough distinctions in the
language and it becomes impossible to communicate. Stop communicating and we all start
killing each other. That's our bias, and we take it seriously. There, that's better.)
THIS SITE IS GREAT FOR PARENTS: To return to a review of the site, rather than its
slogan, parents will probably like the opinions and detailed warnings about probable
problems (swearing, scariness, etc.) even in the "G" rated films. A parent, or
any person squeamish about what might be awaiting them in a movie, will find THE FACTS well
described in reviews at all rating levels, from "G" to "R," at this
site. This is why we have spent so much space on this site, it really is a great place to
get reviews that allow a parent to pre-monitor movies for their children, without having
to see them, or see them twice! On the other hand, these reviews tend to tell you more
FACTS about the plot than you may want to know if you are looking for a review to decide
whether or not you will like a move, rather than whether your children will or should see
it.
