MOVIE RELATED SITES: Cinema, Films, and plain ol' Movies

Film.com - This site is full of features and information for those interested in contemporary films. The site features reviews, photo features, film clips, a chat room, home theatre information, and an on-line store. The tone is irreverent and hip and the graphics are well done.

The Palace - This site is for classic film lovers. There are hundreds of images, many audio clips, and a comprehensive bibliography. There are many informative articles on movies and filmmaking as well as links to many of the best classic film sites on the Web. The site is being updated on a regular basis.

Hollywood Online If you want your movie news "from the horse's mouth," so-to-speak, this is your site. Owned by Times-Mirror, this comprehensive site has so many sections that you can spend days browsing all of them. To whit: Movie Guide, "a one-stop resource for interactive multimedia information relating to current and upcoming motion picture releases;" Video Guide, "a virtual library of current and upcoming home video release information, categorized by video store release date (coming soon, in stores now and all) and genre (action, art/foreign, comedy, documentary, drama, family, horror and sci-fi);" Multimedia, claiming "one of the greatest collections of movie multimedia on the Web. The site features thousands of notes and photos as well as hundreds of sounds available in mac, .au, .wav and .ra; videos and trailers available in theater, .mov and .avi; and dozens of interactive kits available in standard and Shockwave formats;" ShowTimes, featuring "a comprehensive national listing of movies which allows users to locate films by time, zip code, city/state or theatre chain, the official site of the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO);" Movies On-TV, featuring current and future listing of movies on TV including a "grid displaying movie times, channels, ratings, and summaries, as well as a link to complete information about the cast and crew;" Hollywood News "news and breaking stories about Hollywood personalities, the industry, and more; MoviePeople Database this section features a "searchable database of movie facts, personality profiles, filmographies and personnel descriptions," the site claim "more than 131,000 films and 850,000 cast credits" The database is cross-referenced and includes films and personnel from 1895 to the present day; and as if that weren't enough there are also chat rooms, called Buzz Forums for fans and industry professionals and sections on Holly Wood Press Releases, the Academy Awards, the Las Vegas event ShoWest, a Studio Store, and a comprehensive site search engine entitled SiteSeer, from which you can locate information in all or some of this sites sections. Last, but not least, this site features the official web site of The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce!

This service also provides you with the capability of buying tickets in advance for many theaters. Movie-link also provides trailers, posters, etc. and hosts a store "where you can buy merchandise from your favorite movies and TV shows. Other surprises also. . . "

AMG ALL MOVIE GUIDE - This site may have the best movie synopses on the web. The All-Movie Guide states that its Goal is to find and rate ALL feature movies (and major documentaries) -- past or present, b&w or color, on VHS or only seen on late-night TV. For each film, they provide information of interest to viewers. Here you will find comments on old and new movies that may never have been released in VHS format as well as the current blockbusters." They have a ways to go, but it is an interesting site and if you don't find the move that your searching for, they have a great feedback system. You can browse by Star, title, genre, category, etc.

IMDb(Internet Movie Database) describes itself as an international organization whose stated objective is to provide useful and up to date movie information freely available on-line, across as many systems and platforms as possible. It currently claims coverage of over 120,000 movies with over 1,750,000 filmography entries and is expanding continuously. The service is financed by advertising and sponsorship and its maintainers request, but do not require, that you click their sponsors' advertising banners at the top of their pages.

The IMDb database aims to capture any and all information associated with movies from across the world, starting with the earliest cinema, going through to the very latest releases and even movies still in production. It covers filmographies for all professions in the industry; plot summaries; character names; movie ratings; year of release; running times; movie trivia; quotes; goofs; soundtracks; personal trivia; alternative names; certificates; color information; country of production; genres; production companies; distributors; special effects companies; sound mix; reference literature; filming locations; sequel/remake information; release dates; advertising tag lines; detailed technical data; alternative versions; laser disc availability; languages; reviews; links to official studio pages, fan pages, image and multimedia archives; direct purchase links for movies and associated merchandise; box office grosses; movie posters and Academy Award information. THE MOVIELINE This site bills itself as "Movie reviews: Just the facts, No Ratings and No Biases." In a, presumably, unintended bit of irony the only things on the home page are their name, the above motto, an e-mail address, and categories, by RATING: "G," "PG," PG13," and "R." They possibly meant no ratings in the sense that they don't give stars **** to the movies to denote relative goodness. The first review we checked out was for the Glenn Close/Jeff Daniels remake of 101 Dalmatians. In the first few paragraphs we found this statement concerning the scariness of the movie: "A warning may be advisable. . ." --sounds like a bias against scaring your child to us. We suspect that they wanted to convey the thought "no prejudice" rather than "no bias" in their motto. We don't like to carp (actually, we love to carp) but, if you don't have a bias toward good acting, movies, special effects, or whatever, what business do you have reviewing movies anyhow? In fact, this is the most rating conscious and one of the most biased movie review sites we've seen. That's what makes it interesting, the reviewers have opinions and expectations based on experience (that's what a bias is) about the contents of the movies, that's what makes them interesting. They should ditch the slogan, since all three parts are erroneous or ambiguous: they give you more than just the facts, they categorize by ratings, and they present their aesthetic and artistic judgments and warnings based on biases developed through their experience and perception, just like every one else.
(We really are VERY het-up on this language thing. So, at the risk of boring you, we'll be explicit: prejudice is opinion without experience (pre-judgment) bias is opinion gained through experience, as in "I'm biased in favor of the farmers' markets because I have found that they generally have better vegetables." Using one word to mean another destroys the distinction between the two. Destroy enough distinctions in the language and it becomes impossible to communicate. Stop communicating and we all start killing each other. That's our bias, and we take it seriously. There, that's better.)
THIS SITE IS GREAT FOR PARENTS: To return to a review of the site, rather than its slogan, parents will probably like the opinions and detailed warnings about probable problems (swearing, scariness, etc.) even in the "G" rated films. A parent, or any person squeamish about what might be awaiting them in a movie, will find THE FACTS well described in reviews at all rating levels, from "G" to "R," at this site. This is why we have spent so much space on this site, it really is a great place to get reviews that allow a parent to pre-monitor movies for their children, without having to see them, or see them twice! On the other hand, these reviews tend to tell you more FACTS about the plot than you may want to know if you are looking for a review to decide whether or not you will like a move, rather than whether your children will or should see it.

MOVIEWEB MovieWEB has previews of unreleased movies. Each movie has its own web page which lets you download movie pictures, movie posters, production notes, Quicktime videos (of the theatrical movie trailer) and as much information about the cast & synopsis of the film as they can currently get from the studios. At the bottom of each MovieWEB movie web page, the site provides direct links to the home page of the studio and/or web sites dedicated specifically to that particular movie where there might be even more information on these films. MovieWEB includes movies which are not scheduled to be released until later this year and claims to provide trailers months before the trailers are shown at your local movie theatre.
